James A. Pettit

JAMES PETTIT, RESPECTED CITIZEN, PASSES AWAY.

(Written by Record Representative who visited this place).

Roberts, Ill., June 9. -- The death of James A. Pettit, which occurred July 4th, has brought sadness to the homes of our village, for he was a man who was loved and respected. The funeral occurred Saturday afternoon at the M. E. church and was exceptionally large. Rev. Fletcher DeClark conducted the services and was assisted by Rev. Richard Smith. Burial occurred at Lyman cemetery. Rev. DeClark preached a very eloquent sermon, which was consoling to the bereaved relatives and friends. Beautiful music was furnished by C. O. Squires, Mrs. C. E. Van Nice, Mrs. H. M. Wakelin and A. G. Clark. The pall bearers were Prof. C. W. Easton, Robert Hawthorne, William Hahn, J. P. Smith, O. J. Roberts, of Roberts, and J. P. Lowry, of Gibson City. Those who carried flowers were Misses Eva Boyle, Gertrude Smith, Emma Smith, Ethel Mosher, Ethel Chant and Flossie Roberts.
Mr. Pettit had resided in Roberts and vicinity for the past thirty years, and at one time conducted a grain elevator. About eight years ago he sold his elevator and purchased the P. Larson Clothing Store, which he had conducted since that time. He was 53 years of age when death overtook him, and was just in the prime of life.
