Johnson D. Arnold


Johnson D. Arnold, son of Amos S. and Lora N. (Johnson) Arnold, was born at Plattsburg, New York, October 2, 1862, and died at his home in Roberts, Illinois, at 9:15 p.m. August 2nd, 1938, aged 75 years and 10 months. His death was cause by carcinoma.
When Mr. Arnold was five years old he came with his parents to Ford County, Illinois, where he has spent the past seventy years. He grew to manhood and here he married Miss Beckie Zwig on April 6th, 1886. To Mr. and Mrs. Arnold were born eight children. Two of them have preceded him in death. These were Amos who died in infancy and Clyde Chester Arnold who met an accidental death twenty years ago.
The six children who survive are M. R. Arnold of Lamberton, Minnesota, David of Lamberton, Minnesota, Roger of Maryland, Henry of Owasso, Michigan, Ernest of Roberts and Mrs. Samanthy Ruek (sic) also of Roberts.
Mr. Arnold was a man of broad judgment. He traveled much and was familiar with the country in nearly all its parts. He visited almost every geographical secion of our land also made visits to Canada and gained first hand information of various sections.
In visiting a community he was not satisfied with first impressions but studied soils, climate, and all conditions affecting the place as a home. The result was theat he invested in property in various parts of the country and seldom did his judgment prove to be in error. He was absolutely honest in all his dealings and would not countenance dishonest in others. To him the truth was sacred.
He was a man of strong physique and his health was ever good until about three months age he went to the hospital at Bloomington returning home later gradually failing in health. His daughter-in-law Mrs. Mike Arnold, who is a registered nurse came form her home at Lamberton , Minn. to assit in his care. Also another nurse was brought from Chicago and everything that could be done for his care and comfort was done but he never rallied and death came as stated above.
Besides the sons and daughters mentioned above he leaves thirteen grand-children; also one brother Seward Arnold of Roberts, two sisters Mrs. Mary Stevens of Covington, Indiana, and Mrs. Seba Linn of Roberts.
The funeral service was held at the home Friday, August 5th, at two o'clock P.M. the Rev. A. E. Kalkwarf of Chatsworth officiating. Burial was in Lyman Cemetery. The pall bearers were the five sons and the son-in-law.
