James Hoagland
James Franklin Hoagland was born in Ohio, September 16, 1850 and died in Kankakee, Illinois, August 3, 1920, aged 69 years, 10 months and 17 days. His mother died when he was quite young and he went to Keokuk, Iowa, where he lived until grown to manhood.
He married Miss Katie Watterson May 4th, 1882 at Strawn, Illinois. To this union were born eight children all of whom are still living. They are Mrs.Christine Drechsel of Roberts, Clarence of Peoria, Thomas of Cabery, Henry of Winthorp, Minnesota, Carl and David of Roberts, Marion of Chicago and Harry of Kankakee. All of the children were with him at the time of death except Henry and he arrived shortly afterwards. Besides these children he leaves a brother Henry Hoagland of Standish, California, three grandchildren, several other relatives and a host of friends who unite with the family in sorrow at his death.
Mr. and Mrs. Hoagland lived in the vicinity of Strawn, Chatsworth, and Roberts until her death which occurred February 14, 1912. She was a christian woman of highest type and her death was a great loss to the family which was broken up at that time and Mr. Hoagland never appeared to be the same afterwards.
Mr. Hoagland was an earnest, industrious man and made many friends by his congenial dispostion. He was a loving husband, a kind father and obliging neighbor. During the past twenty months he has worked in the Paramount Knitting Factory in Kankakee. While working there he was injured and underwent a slight operation. This seemed to be successful and he was bouyant and hopeful. His son Harry visited him daily and he seemed to be getting along very well. His children from Roberts visited him last Thursday and he planned his coming down here within a week or two and remaining until entirely recovered. Sunday morning after breakfast he was taken with hemmorhages which resulted in his death Tuesday morning.
The funeral servcies were held at the M.E. church in Roberts Thursday afternoon, August 5th at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. D.G. DuBois officiating. A large number of friends from his old home and many from surrounding towns gathered to pay their respects to his memory.
