Marie Bernhardt

Marie, daughter of Thomas and Maragaret  Freebury was born in the state of New York January 26, 1857, and died at her home in Roberts, Illinois, August 10, 1921, aged 70 years, 0 months, and 14 days.
When she was three years old her parents moved to LaSalle County, Illinois, where she grew to womanhood and received her education. While she was still quite young, not yet having reached her sixteenth birthday she was married to Conrad Wagner. To them was born one child a daughter. Within a few years after her marriage she was left a widow. A few years later, in November 1882, she was married to John George Bernhardt who lived near Roberts.
Mr. and Mrs. Bernhardt lived on their farm south of Roberts until the fall of 1901 when they bought a home in Roberts and moved here. Their life in town was only a short one and Mr. Bernhardt died August 28, 1902. Mrs. Bernhardt remained in town a short time and then sold her place here and went back to the farm. About four years ago she purchased another place here and moved to Roberts once more.
The deceased was a devoted wife and a kind mother, not only to her own daughter but to the sons of her husband and to her grandson, Walter Bernhardt, who made his home with her and Mr. Bernhardt from infancy. She was a real neighbor and a woman of excellent Christian character. She united with the Evangelical Church early in life but after moving to Roberts where she could attend services handier she transferred her membership to the M. E. Church here. She was always hospitable and ready to aid the needy and care for the afflicted.
After her husband's death her grandson Walter, lived with her and managed the farm until he went away to school, and since that her other grand children have been with her. During her illness for the past few years her granddaughter, Mrs. Marie Whorrall, has cared for her and has been attentive to her every want.
Mrs. Bernhardt leaves to mourn her death, one daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Maplethorpe of Forrest; eleven grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren ; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Ried and Mrs. Jennie Kiddo; and three brothers, James, John and William Freebury.
The funeral service was held at the M.E. Church in Roberts, Sunday afternoon, August 14th at 2:30 o'clock Mrs. W.F. Dudman officiating after which the remains were laid to rest in Lyman Cemetery.
Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Nancy Ried, Mrs. Sweet, James Freebury, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lyens and two daughters and Mr. and Mrs. John Cordell of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Maplethorpe of Peoria, Mr. and Mrs. George Maplethorpe and sons George and Lee and daughter Edith, and Mr. and Mrs. Dewy Maplethorpe of Forrest; Mrs. John Ark of Cullom; Mr. Gunderson and sons and daughter Earl, Elmer and Daisy, and William Walgenbach and daughters Anna and Julia of Kempton; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Randall and family and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Todd and two sons of Paxton; and Mr. and Mrs. Miles Whorrall and family of Morocco, Indiana.
