Benjamin Ballinger
Benjamin Ballinger, son of Samuel and Anne (Wear) Ballinger was born at Huntington, Indiana, Wednesday, October 4, 1854, and departed this life at his home in Wall Town, four miles southeast of Roberts, Illinois, Tuesday, November 14, 1922, aged 68 years, 1 month and 10 days.
His early years were spent in the state of Kansas but the greater part of his life has been spent in Illinois. First near Lexington and later near Roberts. For many years he has made his home and farmed with his brother Walter being in partnership with him in that work.
In 1884 he married Miss Nann Stokes.. To them were born twin sons who died in infancy and the mother died 1886. Mr. Ballinger never remarried. The deceased was a careful farmer, industrious, good manager, honest, kind hearted, generous and had all those qualities the poets Pope describes as the "noblest work of God." He did not mingle much with others and therefore did not make a wide acquaintance but by those with whom he came in contact he was held in the highest esteem. The friends he had were real friends and to his friends he was a "friend indeed." With strong tenacity of purpose he was known as one to carry through whatever he undertook and another trait remembered by those who miss him, was his readiness at all times to lend a helping hand to a worthy cause. Such men the world needs.
Mr. Ballinger was one of a large family. Abbie Sharts, Beulah Roberts, Asberian Ballinger and Marion Ballinger preceded him in death and he is survived by one sister, and four brothers as follows: Hattie Boethke, Daleview, Montana; John Ballinger, Portland, Kansas; Martin Ballinger, Wichita, Kansas; Albert Ballinger, Oklahoma; and Walter Ballinger of Wall Town.
The funeral services were held at the home Friday afternoon, November 16th, at 1:00 o'clock, Rev. Samuel Johnson of Piper city and Rev. William Hainsworth officiating after which the remains were laid to rest in Lyman Cemetery.
Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ballinger of Gibson city, Isaac Ballinger of Sibley, Mr. and Mrs. Wonderlin of Lexington, Mr. and Mrs. Fawver of Loda, Carl Sleeter of Colfax.
