Mary Alice Brown was born near Salem, Indiana, October 21st, 1861, and departed this life, Thursday, April 28th, 1921, aged 59 years, 6 months, and 7 days. She grew to womanhood in the vicinity of her birth and there she was married in 1881 to Frances Godfrey. She did a mother's part in rearing three step children. In 1903 she was again married to George Arnold. Six years later, in August 1909, she came to Roberts, Illinois, where she has lived since and where she leaves a host of friends who join the mother in sorrow in her loss.
At the age of fifteen she united with the M.E. Church and has always been faithful in her devotion to the cause of the Church. She was of a kindly disposition, a neighbor and friend in time of need and faithful in her duties in Church and Church societies. She was especially faithful in attendance at Sunday School and Prayer Meeting and was always ready to do her part for the success of both. She was also a loyal member of the W.F.M.S., the Ladies Aid, and the W.C.T.U. and will be missed in all these services. But most of all she will be missed by her aged mother for whom she has cared for several years. She also leaves two nephews, Ralph Newman of Champaign and Roy Newman of Forrest.
The deceased has always had fairly good health until about two or three months ago when she failed rapidly, the affliction being a general break down physically and mentally. She was taken to the hospital at Kankakee for treatment about three weeks ago but failed continuously until the end came as stated above.
The funeral service was held at the M.E. church here Sunday afternoon, May 1st, at 2:00 o'clock, Mrs. Dudman officiating. The remains were then laid to rest in Lyman cemetery. Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were H.W. Newman of Renssalaer, Indiana, Mr. and Mrs. B.V. Newman of Chatworth, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Newman of Champaign and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Newman of Forrest.
