Death of Lucy H. Roberts
Mrs. Lucy H. Roberts was born at Heathfield, Eng., May 11, 1845, and died at Roberts, Ill., June 11, 1913, at 3 a.m. She came to America at the age of seven and resided in New York state with her parents about one year, then moved to Bureau county, Ill. In 1858 she moved with her parents to the Pettit farm, 2 1-2 miles south of Roberts, where she lived until her marriage, on Oct. 2nd, 1860, to John Roberts, who was for many years a leading citizen of this community. She was 16 years of age when the marriage occurred. She resided on the Roberts homestead with her husband until the fall of 1889, when they retired and moved to the residence occupied by her at the time of her death. Mrs. Roberts and her husband were very successful in farming. The husband died Nov. 12, 1897. Mrs. Roberts was the mother of 12 children, two having died in infancy. The ten who survive her are Robert T. Roberts, Onarga, Ill.; Frances E. Ebert, Roberts, Ill.; Wm. H. Roberts, Piper City, Ill.; Herbert E. Roberts, Muskogee, Okla.; George F. Roberts, Roberts, Ill.; Charlotte Coultas, East St. Louis, Ill.; Emma J. Stanner, Champaign, Ill.; Charles J. Roberts, Roberts, Ill.; Jesse W. Roberts, Roberts, Ill.; Edward O. Roberts, Roberts, Ill. She is also survived by six brothers and one sister and 16 grandchildren. The brothers are: Fred Pettit, Norfolk, Neb.; Walter, of Colorado; Hiram, of Spokane, Wash.; Albert, of Seattle, Wash.; Caleb, of Fairfield, Okla.; Frank, of Vancouver, B.C.; Sarah Jane Bolton, of Arkansas.
Two brothers of deceased, Frank and Hiram spent some time with her before her death and were present at her funeral. Fred is a retired farmer of Oklahoma and Hiram is a real estate dealer of Spokane, Wash.
Mrs. Roberts was a charter member of the Ladies' Aid society of the Congregational church and was a very affectionate and considerate disposition,-- unselfish to every degree. She was a very faithful and loving wife and mother and was loved by her children and by all who knew her. She will not only be mourned by her large family of children but by her associates in church and charitable works and by a very large number of neighbors and friends.
She was a true Christian woman and lived her religion in her daily life.
The funeral was held on June 12, 1913, at he Congregational church at Roberts. Rev. W. B. Milne, of Clifton, officiated, assisted by Rev. Richard Smith, of the Congregational church of Roberts. The pall bearers were old citizens and close friends of the family -- R. B. chamber, J. P. Smith, John Talbot, Mike Dolan, John Kenkard, Harry Fairley.
Music was furnished by the choir, which sang several years ago when deceased was in better health and able to attend church regularly. There were many beautiful flowers.
