Mrs. Gertrude Gimbel
Gertrude Mehrfeld daughter of John and Gertrude (Cole) Mehrfeld was born in Hesse, Germany, December 21, 1837, and died in Roberts, Illinois, August 21, 1927, 89 years and 8 months. She grew to womanhood in her native land and there she was united in marriage to Conrad Gimbel, Easter Sunday April 13th, 1855. Mr. Gimbel died February 20th, 1915.
To Mr. and Mrs. Gimbel were born eleven children. Nine of them still survive. These are Mrs. Katherine Dippel of Granville, Anna Katherine, deceased, Mrs. Mary Dippel of Belmont, Iowa, John of Granville, Henry of Harrrisburg, South Dakota, Mrs. Annie Lally of Roberts, August of Melvin, Mrs. Sophia Gullett, Conrad Deceased, Tobias and Miss Augusta of Roberts.
Fourteen years after the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Gimbel, iz, 1869, they left their native land to seek a new home in America. They landed at Granville, Putnam county, Illinois, April 9, 1869, and lived there five years. They then moved to Thawville, Illinois, where they lived two years, then to Buckley which was their home for four years. In 1880 they moved to the farm southwest of Roberts which was their home for twenty-three years and which was occupied by the family for twenty-one years after that, so that this farm was known as the Gimbel home for forty-four years.
In 1903 Mr. and Mrs. Gimbel retired from the active management of the farm and moved to Roberts where he died in 1915 and where she has lived since.
Mrs. Gimbel was a sincere Christian. In childhood she was taught the principles of her religion. She was baptized in infancy and was confirmed in the Lutheran Church. She was a good mother a kind neighbor and generous in all her acts. During the past several years she has been an invalid but prior to that during her active life she as prompt and faithful in her duties to her family, her church, her country and to the community, respected and loved by all, and during her long illness she has been patient in her suffering and careful to avoid adding extra burdens to any.
The funeral was held at the home Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock Rev. John T. Killip officiating. The remains were then laid to rest in Lyman cemetery.
